Le Temps is a project by Tega Brain, Brad Miller and Adam Hinshaw developed in collaboration with project partners Climatewatch Australia and the Botanic Gardens, Sydney. The project explores the collection and visualisation of local phenology data.

Phenology is the study of recurring biological events in the animal and plant world. It is the study of the timing of these events in animals and plants, the causes of their timing in terms of biotic and abiotic forces, and the interrelation among phases of the same or different species. Flowering cycles of plants, leaf unfolding, fruit ripening, the departure of migrating birds and animals and the timing of breeding are all examples of phenological events. There is a growing interest in recording changing phenological patterns as a way of investigating the impacts of climate change on the biosphere.

Climatewatch has recently launched an phone application allowing smartphone users to log phenological events to an Australian database. Our project examines this growing repository of citizen collected data and explores how it can be meaningfully visualised.

Download the app and start logging the phenology data happening in your own neighbourhood.
