Code as Creative Medium (2021)

Code as Creative Medium is a handbook for teachers and practitioners in the fields of art and design who are working with code. Co-authored with Golan Levin, it presents a collection of classic creative coding prompts and assignments, accompanied by annotated examples of both historic and contemporary projects. These are enriched by more than 170 illustrations of creative work, short exercises, and a set of interviews with leading educators.

Published by MIT Press in Februrary 2021, the book has since been translated into Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

NOTES ON COMPUTATIONAL BOOK DESIGN

Code as Creative Medium is the first book by MIT Press to be designed computationally. We worked with computational designer Kyuha Shim to script the layout using Basil.js, a Javascript library that automates InDesign.
