Post the Met (2014)

Metropolitan Museum images, Craigslist account, javascript.

Screenshots, Craigslist listing.

Is it possible to tell the difference between items in the Metropolitan Museum archive and those listed in the antiques section of Craigslist? Could Craiglist connect the museum with a radically different audience?

Post the Met is a bot that randomly selects an entry from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s public image archive, and posts it to the antiques section of Craigslist each day. Each Craiglist post asks interested parties to make an offer on the item and is shared via a bot on Twitter.

Might the museum’s web archives be more enjoyable in a familiar context - without all that cultural posturing? Squint a little and its quite easy to imagine that Egyptian sarcophagus in your living room. Wouldn’t it look great?

Make an offer!
